The new stay and play wireless fence is a small, rechargeable system that provides an adjustable 3/4 of an acre circular boundary for your pet anywhere you go. The lightweight wireless transmitter is less than half the size of the previous PetSafe wireless fence and has no wires to bury. The waterproof, rechargeable receiver collar is ergonomically designed for your pets comfort, and offers 5 levels of static correction plus a tone-only mode for training. With the ease of setup, this system is perfect for traveling with your pet. The stay and play is also compatible with the original pif-300, and allows you to expand your wireless coverage. To use, simply plug in the wireless radio transmitter in the center of the area you designate for your pet. Mark the boundary zone with the included flags to teach your pet where he or she is allowed to roam. Then place the receiver collar on your pet. The system will deliver a warning beep as your pet nears the boundary zone marked by the flags, and if your pet crosses the zone the collar will give a safe, static correction. With a little training, your pet will soon understand to avoid the boundary zone and will be safely contained within your yard. You can also contain a second dog with this system, simply by adding an additional stay and play receiver collar (second collar sold separately). The receiver collar included in the stay and play is waterproof and fits dogs 5-pound or larger with neck sizes of 6-23-inch. For use in the US only. This unit is compatible with all US 110v outlets and are not to be used with 220v international voltage.

Choosing an Wireless Dog Fence - RF Vs WiFi

!±8± Choosing an Wireless Dog Fence - RF Vs WiFi

Until this year if you wanted an wireless dog fence, the only game in town was the PetSafe IF-300. Using traditional radio wave technology, the IF-300 creates a containment radius of up to 90 feet giving it a coverage of 0.5 acres. The IF-300 works well and gets good reviews from our customers, but the range limits its usefulness. After all the most common use for wireless systems, with their circular containment area is rural properties where a 90 foot range is simplify too small.

Perimeter Technologies is introducing in April 2009 a WiFi Fence, a wireless containment system based on the WiFi technology that is used in the wireless internet routers that are in most people's homes. This has two significant advantages, range and the ability for two way communication. It also has one significant disadvantage, power usage.

The WiFi dog fence claims a containment radius range of 200 feet giving it a containment area of over 2.5 acres, a major improvement over the IF-300. Although, we would love to see something even larger, using perhaps WiMax which has a reported range over a mile. WiFi still gives a large enough coverage area for your dogs to get some real space.

The WiFi fence also has two-way communication between the collar and the base station, telling the owner instantly how far the dog has wandered. I also gives you instant alerts if the dog challenges the boundary, if the battery is running low, or if the link between the collar and base station is lost. This alert is really useful and we hope it finds wider adoption, since particularly in the early days of the training you are constantly worrying about if the dog has escaped.

The downside is that WiFi is notoriously power hungry, so we are concerned that this will result in poor battery life. The collar for the WiFi dog fence is not rechargeable, and is likely proprietary so we hope that Perimeter has this problem solved because the feature set should make this the new leader in wireless dog containment.

Underground Fence For Pet Containment

!±8± Underground Fence For Pet Containment

Underground Fence has increased its popularity over the time. What is underground fence and why is it popular to many pet owners? Unlike the traditional fence, underground fence is easy to install. This can be installed in any part of your house that you want to limit your pet's access. Wires can be placed around swimming pool, gardens without worrying that your pet might tamper your plants. A lot of pet owners preferred this type of fence than physical or traditional fence because it is much less expensive in terms of maintenance. They are great alternative way preferred by homeowners in subdivisions that do not allow visible fence.

Underground fence consists of boundary wire, transmitter, receiver, test light, training flags and sign. With underground fences a wire is installed underground or above ground, depending on the system. This wire transmits a radio signal that the wire, acting as an antenna, turns into an electromagnetic wave. A small receiver is attached to the dog's collar; when the dog gets close enough to the wire the receiver can pick up the signal. The dog will first hear a warning tone, if it continues to the boundary it will receive an electric shock. The dog learns through a few week's of training where the boundary lies.

After installation brightly colored flags are placed along the fence line. This marks the boundary. When first training the dog, it will only hear the tone and not receive the physical correction (the shock). The first week of training is done on leash, when it hears the signal jerk the dog back to the yard and give praise. For the first few days, one prong on the collar is taped so that the dog can hear the warning tone without experiencing the correction. When the dog learns to return to the yard after hearing the tone it is time for the dog to experience the physical correction. When it feels the shock, pull the dog back to the yard. Slowly distractions can be added to the outside of the boundary. When the dog ignores the distractions, give praise. After about a week, try off leash training. Slowly, as the dog learns, the flags can be removed; first every other flag and then more, until they are gone.

Dogs should always be safely contained so that they cannot be teased or injured by other animals or by children and so they cannot escape.

Deterring Digging Dogs

!±8± Deterring Digging Dogs

There are numerous reasons why a dog might start and continue digging up your yard. These can include the need to bury something, to retrieve something buried earlier (somewhere), to try and catch a burrowing animal, to create a cool spot to lie down in or even a sleeping area, and to escape.

Dogs that start digging from a very early age, become some of the more determined and relentless diggers. So, how can we deter the dog that is determined to dig?

There are a number of temporary and more permanent solutions available. We will start with the temporary solutions so that you can action them whilst looking into which permanent solution is going to best suit your situation. The temporary solutions are good for short term results in stopping the dog from continuing to dig, where the permanent solutions are great for stopping the dog from digging up the same garden, and for excluding the dog from certain areas where he once enjoyed digging.

There are two temporary options that obtain some decent results. The first simply involves using a balloon. Simply inflate the balloon to snugly fit in a pre-existing hole and then cover over with the fresh soil. Natural curiosity will have the dog re-digging the hole shortly. As the dog does this, his paws will 'POP' the balloon giving him a startle. This will keep him from digging anymore for the next little while. Ensure that you pick up the balloon pieces.

Another option is to place dog poo in the holes your dog has already dug up. The majority of dogs dislike having poo on their paws and will avoid digging in that hole again. The only downside, is that it doesn't stop new holes from being established, but it can definitely curb holes from being enlarged.

There is also the Contech Scarecrow, a motion driven device that shoots a burst of water every time an animal passes in front of it. This will prevent the dog from even getting started on the hole - unless, of course, he enjoys digging in the rain.

Now to the permanent results, you may have heard of the 'Invisible Dog Fence', this now encompasses far more then the simple transmitter, collar and wire approach of a year or so ago. The great thing is that ease of use has been well maintained during some great product development. For smaller areas, there is an item referred to as a PetSafe Pawz Away Outdoor Pet Barrier. It resembles a rock, is waterproof and is some great options in making this system work in your garden.

For a larger area like a house block or larger, you are probably best to consider a full invisible dog fence, also known as a containment system.
